Part of our Essentials Aggregates range, Sharp Sand is a coarse, warm brown sand with sharp, angular grains, cleaned and washed to ensure a consistent, reliable quality throughout. Coarser than standard building sand, it’s specifically suited to paving and landscaping applications where extra strength, cohesion, and compaction are needed.

Its main use is as a laying course bedding mortar beneath paving and patio slabs, where its angular grain structure gives the mortar mix additional strength and stability, helping slabs sit firmly and evenly once laid. It’s equally well suited to use under block paving, providing a solid, compacted bedding layer that supports the blocks and helps prevent movement once trafficked. When mixed with cement, it also produces stronger foundations, making it a dependable choice for a range of general construction work.

Beyond bedding and laying course applications, sharp sand can be blended with other materials to make lime mortar for pointing in general masonry work, and forms part of tougher mortar mixes used for laying sand screed beds. Its washed, consistent grade provides excellent drainage and compaction, qualities that also make it useful when mixed into seed and cutting compost to improve drainage for young plants.
