Description

A true garden multitasker, our Horticultural Potting Grit is a fine, fully versatile aggregate in soft grey tones flecked with cream, gold, and darker mineral specks, designed to improve drainage and support healthy plant growth throughout the garden. Being entirely lime-free, it’s suitable for use with a wide range of plants, including those that dislike lime in their growing medium, making it a genuinely adaptable addition to any potting shed or greenhouse.

When added to compost, this fine grit provides valuable extra drainage, helping to prevent waterlogging in containers and hanging baskets. It’s particularly well suited to cacti, succulents, and alpines, plants that thrive in sharply drained, free-flowing growing mediums and struggle when roots sit in damp compost for too long. Mixed through their compost, it recreates the gritty, well-drained conditions these plants would naturally grow in.

Its usefulness extends well beyond potting mixes. Dug into heavy or clay-based soil, Horticultural Potting Grit helps break up dense, compacted ground, creating tiny air pockets that allow water to drain through more efficiently while also giving plant roots the room they need to expand and establish properly. This makes it a valuable soil improver for borders and beds struggling with poor drainage.

Around the garden more generally, this grit is also commonly used to weigh down plant pots and containers, adding stability to taller or top-heavy displays, and as a neat top dressing for newly planted patio and ornamental plants, giving beds and containers a tidy, finished appearance while continuing to aid drainage at the surface. As a natural product, please expect minor variation in colour and grade between batches.
