Essential for serious gardeners, our Horticultural Grit is a coarse, crushed rock aggregate in warm terracotta and rust tones, flecked with cream, grey, and gold, designed to improve soil structure and support healthy plant growth. Its angular, sharp-edged particles create air pockets within compost and soil, enhancing aeration and ensuring excellent drainage, two factors that are critical for preventing waterlogging and root rot in a wide range of planting situations.
Being entirely lime-free, this grit is safe to use with lime-hating, ericaceous plants as well as general planting, making it a genuinely versatile addition to the potting shed or greenhouse. It’s a staple ingredient for improving potting mixes, where blending it through compost creates a freer-draining growing medium that suits alpines, succulents, and Mediterranean plants that dislike sitting in damp soil. It also plays an important role in propagation, where its sharp drainage properties help prevent cuttings from rotting before they’ve had the chance to root, giving young plants the best possible start.
Beyond potting and propagation, horticultural grit is commonly used to anchor heavy pots and containers, adding weight to the base to improve stability, particularly useful for taller or top-heavy planting displays exposed to wind. It can also be worked into heavy clay soils to break up compaction and improve overall drainage across beds and borders, or used as a decorative, functional mulch around alpine and rockery planting. Its uses also extend to the fish pond where it can be used to line the pond bed.
