Grit Sand

Part of our Essentials Aggregates range, Grit Sand is a coarse, warm brown sand with sharp, angular grains, cleaned and washed to ensure consistent quality throughout. Coarser than our Sharp Sand, it offers even greater strength and load-bearing capability, making it particularly well suited to projects involving heavier paving blocks and slabs where extra support is needed.

Its main use is as a laying course bedding mortar beneath paving and patio slabs, where its coarser, more angular grain structure provides additional strength and cohesion compared to finer sands. This makes it a strong choice for use under block paving, particularly where heavier blocks are being laid, as the coarser grit offers greater support and stability than sharp sand alone, helping to keep blocks firmly in place under greater weight and everyday traffic.

When mixed with cement, Grit Sand also produces notably strong foundations, making it a dependable option for construction work that demands real durability. It can be blended with other materials to create lime mortar for pointing in general masonry, and forms part of tougher mortar mixes used for laying sand screed beds. Its washed, consistent grade delivers excellent drainage and compaction, benefits that also make it useful when worked into seed and cutting compost to aid drainage for young plants.
