Description
A natural, hardworking mulch, our Bark is made up of shredded and chipped wood pieces in warm brown tones, ranging from fine strands to chunkier chips, giving borders and planted areas an attractive, natural finish. Spread across the surface of soil, it forms a protective layer that brings real practical benefits to the garden while also tidying up the overall look of beds, borders, and planted displays.
One of its main uses is weed suppression, as a decent layer of bark blocks light from reaching the soil surface, preventing weed seeds from germinating and significantly reducing the amount of weeding needed throughout the growing season. It’s equally effective for moisture retention, helping to slow down evaporation from the soil beneath and keeping plant roots consistently hydrated during drier spells, which reduces how often beds need watering.
Bark also acts as a natural insulator, helping to protect plant roots from extremes of temperature, keeping soil cooler in summer and offering some protection against frost in winter. Over time, as the bark gradually breaks down, it adds organic matter back into the soil, improving structure and fertility, so it continues to benefit the garden long after it’s first been laid.
Beyond its practical benefits, bark is widely used for its decorative finish, giving borders, tree surrounds, and shrub beds a neat, natural appearance that works well with most planting styles. It’s also commonly used in children’s play areas as a safe, cushioning surface, and along informal woodland paths for a natural, low-maintenance ground covering. As a natural product, please expect some variation in colour, texture, and piece size between batches.
